Gameplay Details

Chess Free offers a standard 8x8 chessboard with 16 pieces for each player: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns. The objective is to checkmate your opponent’s king, which means placing the king in a position where it is under attack and cannot escape capture.

Starting Position

  • White: Moves first and occupies the bottom rows of the board.
  • Black: Moves second and occupies the top rows of the board.

Piece Movements

  • King: Moves one square in any direction.
  • Queen: Moves any number of squares in any direction (vertically, horizontally, or diagonally).
  • Rook: Moves any number of squares vertically or horizontally.
  • Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally.
  • Knight: Moves in an “L” shape: two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicular.
  • Pawn: Moves forward one square, but captures diagonally. On its first move, a pawn can move forward two squares.

Special Moves

  • Castling: A move involving the king and a rook, allowing the king to move two squares towards the rook, and the rook to move to the square next to the king.
  • En Passant: A special pawn capture that can occur when a pawn moves two squares forward from its starting position and lands beside an opponent’s pawn, which can then capture it as if it had moved only one square forward.
  • Pawn Promotion: When a pawn reaches the opposite end of the board, it can be promoted to any other piece (except a king), typically a queen.
